So there I was, standing in my turret, about half way through an almost eight hour mission. We startedat 1930, and its around midnight now. The convoy is stopped for a moment, and I am passed some information from the vehicle commander so I can notify the other vehicles of what they need to know. Simply known as a one fifty three(153), or one five three, the device is basically a walkie talkie, but a really nice expensive one. Pushing the button to talk, I pass along the info. What happens next is something easily understood by all of you, and completely alien to me. The Marine on the other end says "Why?"
I stood there dumbfounded. I had a blank look on my face. I stuttered, even though I wasn't talking to anyone, or even trying to say anything. Did I hear him right? Since when has "why" been in our vocabulary? Lucky for me, since I may have shortly exploded, literally, another message came across the radio, this time in a differant voice. "Roger, will pass the info to the rest of the convoy." I realized the other Marine in the vehicle must have snatched the 153 from the "why Marine". I may owe my life to the quick thinking and action of the "other Marine"!
